Maths Balance Volumes ‘A Year Closer’ (Penultimate Press)

If an album like The Caretaker’s ‘Selected Memories From The Haunted Ballroom’ summons up the spectral resonances of crumbling decadence, ‘A Year Closer’ is the sound of old middle America dissolving into generational decline. Minnesota’s Maths Balance Volumes place snippets of sampled scratchy folk records among ephemeral sonic Americana. ‘Clearing’ combines the creaking of a what could be ghostly screen door with half-heard chattering voices, while ‘When I Drink’ sounds like the spectral recording of a drunken saloon bar that hasn’t existed for 60 years. It’s quite astounding.
