Pow-wow is the distinctive singing performed by indigenous American communities, usually accompanied by driving percussion and performative dance. On his debut album, ‘Niineta’, Minneapolis-based singer Joe Rainey has worked with producer Andrew Broder to mix his pow-wow vocal style with ambient washes and an electronic pulse. On tracks such as ‘Bezhigo’ and ‘ch. 1222’, not only does Rainey strengthen his connection with this traditional music, but he captures something of America’s mythic big skies and wide, open plains.
